Islamorada Fly Fishing the Flats for Big Tarpon in the Florida Keys

bjbjWELCOME BACK YA LL, THE WIND
IS STILL ABSOLUTELY HOWLING ON US OUT HERE BUT WE TARPON MOVING IN FROM STRAIGHT OUT,
THERE MOVING IN FROM THE RIGHT, KINDA MOVING IN FROM ALL AROUND, SO GOT EAGLE EYES ON THE
BACK, BACH THERE, CAPTAIN HONSON LAU. HE CAN SPOT EM. HE S SEEING THEM LIKE TWENTY FEET
BEFORE I M SEEING THEM SO . . . THERE COMING IN REAL CLOSE. THAT ONE THAT I JUST HOOKED,
WAS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT BELOW THE BOAT RIGHT HERE. I COULD HAVE POKED HIM WITH MY ROD.
IT S AMAZING WHEN YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING JUST LIGHT UP IN FRONT OF YOUR EYES RIGHT
UNDER THE BOAT ISN T IT?YEAH AND AS THAT SUN COMES UP . . . YOU GET A GOOD
PAIR OF COSTA DEL MAR SUNGLASSES, IT S LIKE SOMEBODY JUST SLOWLY STARTS TURNING UP THE
DIMMER SWITCH ON THE FLAT OUT HERE BECAUSE IT S JUST . . . YOU ALL SEE THAT OUT THERE,
IT S BEAUTIFUL DOWN HERE. HONSON, TELL ME ARE WE GOING TO BE LOOKING FOR THEM UP ON
TOP OF THE WATER COMING TO US OR ARE THEY RIDING LOW? THEY MOVE ALL SORTS OF WAYS BUT
HOW ARE THEY GOING TO COME TO US?IT SEEMS LIKE THE BIGGER, SINGLE FISH WILL
SWIM A LITTLE DEEPER AND THE BIGGER PODS OF MIGRATING FISH WILL SWIM A LITTLE HIGHER IN
THE WATER COLUMN. THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT ARE A LITTLE EASIER TO SEE AND THE ONES THAT
WILL EAT BETTER. BLAIR, I THINK WE HAVE SOME FISH COMING AT US. [LAUGHS] WE VE GOT SOME

TO DO A ONE EIGHTY TO EAT THAT FLY.NO, HE WAS COMING RIGHT AT IT.OH,
O.K.IT WAS TICKLING HIS NOSE THE WHOLE TIME.[LAUGHS] OH, MAN.
YOU HAD YOUR EYE ON THAT OTHER FISH. LUCKLY, THIS IS THE SMALLER OF THE TWO.YEAH,
THE OTHER ONE WAS BIGGER THAT S WHY I WAS LOOKING AT THAT ONE.THERE S A CRAB
TRAP WAY OUT THERE.DON T WORRY, WE LL BE ALRIGHT. AS LONG AS YOU DON T PUT A
LOT OF PRESSURE, WE LL BE O.K. HE S NO WHERE NEAR THAT CRAB TRAP.HOW MUCH BACKING

BLAIR>YALL CAN T TELL THE WINDS PROBABLY BLOWING TWENTY . . . ATLEAST TWENTY MILES
AN HOUR AND IT S A STEADY WIND. WE VE BEEN SITTING ON THE BANK ALL MORNING LONG AND WHAT
HAPPENS IS WHEN THE TIDE CHANGES THE TARPON START FALLING OUT AND THEY COME UP AND THEY
EAT LITTLE GREEN FLY WHEN YOU PUT EM NEAR THEIR HEAD.LITTLE GREEN COOKIE

IN THE GUIDES.SEEING FLY LINE?SEEING FLY LINE. HEARING FLY LINE?

[LAUGHS] THAT S A GOOD FISH THERE, BRAH!OH, YEAH. NOT A HUG FISH BUT ONE OF THESE
MALES AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS MY FAVORITE SIZE FISH THERE.YEAH, WHEN THEY GET
TOO BIG MAN, THEY JUST ARE WAY TO MUCH WORK.YEPTHAT ALWAYS AMAZES ME

IT S ABSOLUTE PEAK TARPON TIME WOULDN T YOU SAY?I D SAY SO.[LAUGHS]
WITH WHAT WE VE SEEN THE LAST COUPLE OF HOURS?LAST COUPLE OF HOURS WE
VE SEEN THEM JUST PARADING BY THE BOAT AND YOU JUST GOTTA KEEP THROWING AT THEM AND THROWIN
AT EM AND THROWIN AT EM UNTIL YOU FINALLY FIND THAT ONE THAT S HUNGRY AND EATS. SLOWLY
BUT SURELY.THIS ONE DOESN T WANT TO PLAY NICE.I GUESS MY NEW FLATS
BLUE FLY ROD DID THIS ONE PRETTY GOOD HUH?I WOULD SAY SO.FOR A TEN
WEIGHT, THIS ONE SURE FEELS LIKE A TWELVE WEIGHT TO ME BUT IT CAST LIKE A GOOD TEN WEIGHT.
WHEN THEY RE READY, THEY ARE READY AND WHEN THEY RE READY A LOT OF TIME THEY WILL COME
UP AND LAY ON THE SIDE OF THE BOAT HERE. GOT HIM THAT TIME?UGH! UH OW!

PERFECT! PERFECT HOOK, NOW GUYS THESE TARPON ARE SO UNIQUE TO THIS AREA AND I TELL YOU
WHAT, THERE S SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS YOU CAN CATCH THEM HERE. YOU CAN CATCH EM ON THE FLATS
LIKE WE RE DOING RIGHT NOW, YOU VE GOT EM AROUND THE BRIDGES, YOU CAN LIVE BAIT EM AND
HONSON LOVES DOING THE FLY ROD AND FOR YOU FLY RODDERS OUT THERE THAT HAVE BEEN BEGGING
FOR A FLY SHOW, HERE YOU GO . . . THE KING OF THE FLATS RIGHT HERE BABY. ONE THING THAT
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ABOUT TARPON HONSON IS HOW THEIR HEAD LOOKS LIKE IT S BEEN CHIZZELD OUT
OF A BLOCK OF ICE. THAT IS SO BEAUTIFUL . . . ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FISH IN THE WORLD. THAT
S WHY THEY CALL THEM THE GLAMOUR FISH! LET S GET SOME WATER THROUGH HIS GILLS AND GO
GET ON OUR STAKE. HE S NOT GOING TO TAKE TOO LONG WITH THE OXYGEN IN THE WATER.
