Sandals/Shoes


How were the Prophet’s sandals, peace and blessings be upon him? One of the beautiful things in the Prophet’s life that we should pay attention to is that he cared about wearing good, beautiful sandals. His sandals, peace and blessings be upon him, were made from good quality, original leather. They were sown to a distinct pattern. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, specifically chose for his sandals to be this design. (In Topkapi) His sandals were long and slender with the fore part shaped like the extremity of the tongue. This shape protects the toes from harm such as stones. The sandal had a wide strap which embraced and protected the heel. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was described as having little flesh on his heel. The sandal had two strips. A strip that passed between the big toe and the toe next to it. And another strip that passed between the middle toe and the toe after it. The sandal was described as being narrow in the middle, but it widened at both ends. This was how the Prophet’s sandals were, peace and blessings be upon him and his family and companions. We have described and drawn the sandals of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, because some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah said, “I love to make my sandals just like the sandals of the Prophet.” The blessing of sandals/shoes One of the most important things to know about shoes is to perceive that they are a blessing from the blessings of Allah. They protect us from harm and injury. They protect our feet from any nail or harmful thing on the ground. The bird and the leather socks Once, when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was about to put on his leather socks, a bird came and took the sock. As it did so, a scorpion fell out. The Prophet then instructed that we should shake out our shoes before wearing them. So we should check the insides of our shoes first because it is an important sunnah. There may be an insect or something harmful inside. And this happens to many people. The Prophetic method of wearing shoes From his manners, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, is that he loved to wear his right sandal first. When he removed his sandals, he started with the left one. Preserving balance The Prophet forbade from walking in just one shoe, because this displaces one’s equilibrium. And this was from his Sunnah, to dislike something that went against the natural human disposition. For example, rolling up one sleeve while leaving the other unrolled. Or rolling up one trouser leg while leaving the other. Or wearing something that has just one sleeve. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not like anything that upset the balance. Allah created us with two eyes and two ears and two hands. Allah created us in the best form, with this balance. Why do we displace the balance Allah has granted us? How would the Prophet carry his sandals, peace and blessings be upon him? The Companions reported to us that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when carrying his sandals, would do so with his left hand, with his small finger. Some of the Companions would carry the sandals of the Prophet, peace be upon him. ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud was famous for being ‘the bearer of the Prophet’s sandals,’ peace and blessings be upon him. He attained this honour! And from this we learn a sunnah that we should carry our parents’ or teachers’ shoes. This is a sunnah that we learnt from the Companions with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him; a practice he consented to. It energizes the circulatory system One needs to wear shoes that are appropriate for his feet, so that he won’t be hurt. Wearing tight shoes or high or crooked heels may cause health problems. Therefore, one should know that it is from the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to preserve the feet by wearing good shoes. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, chose good sandals, without being excessive and extravagant. It is amazing that the Companions – Allah be pleased with them and make them pleased – conveyed to us the details of Prophet’s sandals, peace be upon him, in the compilations of Prophetic traditions. Someone asked ‘Abdallah ibn ‘Umar, “Why do you wear tanned, hairless sandals?” He replied, “I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wear tanned, hairless sandals.” So if they followed the Messenger of Allah even in these matters which we might think of as minor, then it indicates to us that every single act in following the Beloved, peace and blessings be upon him, contains wisdom and a secret to it. So we, Allah willing, travel with our physical and metaphorical feet on his path, peace and blessings be upon him, so as to travel on the path of His saying: {Say, (O Muhammad, to mankind): If ye love Allah, follow me; Allah will love you!}
